What type of barcode to choose

Choose the barcode format based on the data you need to encode and where it will be scanned. Retail barcodes are stricter because point-of-sale systems expect fixed digit lengths and check digits. Internal labels can usually use a more flexible format.

• Code 128 is the safest default for internal labels, shipping IDs, asset tags, and mixed letters or numbers.
• EAN-13 is for retail products that use a 13-digit product code.
• UPC-A is for 12-digit retail product codes, especially in North America.
• Code 39 is useful for simple uppercase letters, numbers, and a few symbols when broad scanner compatibility matters.
• ITF-14 is commonly used for cartons, cases, and logistics packaging that carry a 14-digit GTIN.
